Public Affairs & Communications Manager

Public Affairs & Communications Manager

About Wellspring

Wellspring helps organizations driving change communicate with clarity, speed, and impact. Founded in 2025, we're a fast-growing public affairs firm that works with leading energy developers, infrastructure companies, and advocacy organizations on some of the most complex and consequential energy projects across the country.

Our work sits at the intersection of policy, media, and local engagement. We support projects that require close coordination with community stakeholders, local leaders, and elected officials to move forward.

The Role

Wellspring’s founder and principal is looking for a Public Affairs & Communications Manager to take on a meaningful share of day-to-day client work. This is a 1099 contractor position at 25–30 hours per week, with the potential to grow into a full-time role as the firm scales.

You’ll work directly with the principal across a portfolio of client accounts. These are projects that shape local economies, advance the energy transition, and require thoughtful engagement with municipalities and the communities hosting them.

This role is ideal for someone with 4–7 years of experience in communications, public affairs, or media relations who wants to work at a small, high-growth firm where their contributions are visible and valued from day one.

We're looking for someone excited by the energy transition who brings strong writing skills, sound judgment, and fluency using media tools to research, draft, and refine communications strategies in complex, high-stakes environments.

What You’ll Do

  • Draft and edit client deliverables including talking points, op-eds, media pitches, stakeholder communications, and social content

  • Manage and maintain communications calendars across multiple client accounts

  • Build and maintain media lists; pitch reporters and manage follow-up

  • Prepare media briefing materials, interview prep documents, and rapid response messaging

  • Monitor media coverage and online conversation relevant to client issues

  • Support the development of message frameworks and narrative strategy for new and existing clients

  • Coordinate with client teams on scheduling, approvals, and content workflows

  • Join client calls and provide input on communications strategy and execution

What We’re Looking For

  • 4–7 years of experience in strategic communications, public affairs, media relations, or a related field

  • Excellent writing and editing skills; you can produce a clean first draft on a tight turnaround

  • Experience pitching media and managing reporter relationships

  • Comfort working across multiple clients and shifting priorities throughout the day

  • Familiarity with energy, infrastructure, climate, or corporate communications (a plus, not a requirement)

  • Self-directed work style; you flag problems early and propose solutions

  • Strong organizational instincts. You keep track of deadlines, deliverables, and details without being asked

  • Based on the East Coast or willing to work East Coast hours

Compensation & Structure

  • 1099 independent contractor; 25–30 hours per week

  • Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience

  • Flexible schedule
